Picking coffee and the night market
were the first two themes to become very popular. Mariano has
painted each of them hundreds of times. His paintings of picking
coffee are among the most beautiful of any artist, especially when
he paints it in the large format, such as this painting. Mariano
Gonzalez Chavajay is the first artist to develop a technique to
paint the coffee berries projecting slightly above the surface of
the canvas. This particular painting, I suspect, was painted in his
studio under his supervision, mainly by Julian Coche who at the time
was helping him as an assistant. Although Julia can imitate
Mariano’s style surprisingly well, I suspect that the faces were
done by Mariano himself. The price of the painting is considerably
less than it would be if Mariano had painted all of it. |
