Una Pareja Alegre
(A Happy Couple)

Lorenzo Gonzalez Chavajay

Lorenzo wrote of this painting:

"Un par de casados, abrazando el hombre a la mujer, en senar de estar contentos, con vistuario de San Juan Comalapa en Chimaltenango"

"A married couple, the man hugging the woman, a sign that they are content, wearing the dress of San Juan Comalapa in the Department of Chimaltenango"

Lorenzo captures in this painting, the warm spirit of many of the Mayan Indians of highland Guatemala, a couple that obviously truly love each other, and the warmth of their feeling for each other overflows to people who they encounter. To me this painting, more than any other, represents the essence—the soul—of the Mayan people.
