Well known San Juan Comalapa artist Salvador Cumes Curruchich
believed that, in a field dominated exclusively by men, women
could become excellent painters. With his help a group of
interested women formed a women’s painting collective. He
encouraged them to develop themes from their Maya culture. Paula
Nicho was one of these women. With Salvador’s encouragement and
support, Paula Nicho has become the most original Maya woman
artist in Guatemala. Although Paula’s fame has eclipsed that of
her husband, Salvador is pleased for her success. Many of
Paula’s themes come from her dreams, especially those of flying.
A strong defender of her Maya traditions, in her paintings she
expresses her determination that both as a woman and as a Maya
she be treated as an equal. |
