Although Domingo Garcia was one of the first San Pedro artists I met, we did not start working closely together around 1999.  I had suggested that he should work more slowly and find original themes. Surprisingly he listened and his new paintings came out very beautiful. Domingo more than any other painter captures the traje of his home San Pedro la Laguna. Unlike the other artists who almost exclusively paint people from other towns, especially nearby Santiago Atitlán, Domingo paints people from San Pedro la Laguna. His people are very stylized, but then so are his plants which often have a somewhat art deco aspect to them, and the almost op-art look of the traje designs. Domingo Garcia after years of hard work and perseverance seems about to emerge as an important Mayan artist. While some Tz'utuhil artists paint fifty to one hundred paintings a year, Domingo Garcia works very slowly probably painting no more than ten paintings a year.
